The Epomaker Luma84 arrives in a minimalist package that mirrors its design philosophy. Inside, you’ll find the keyboard, extra keycaps, a USB dongle, extra switches, a keycap puller, a detachable cable, and basic documentation. You basically have everything you need, and a bit extra in case a switch or two suddenly dies out.

The first impression I got with the Epomaker Luma84 is strong; the aluminum-heavy build immediately feels premium, and its compact footprint suggests portability was a key design goal. Even before powering it on, the Luma84 communicates sturdiness and refinement. The Luma84 measures 314mm x 128mm x 25mm and weighs just 590g. For context, it’s comparable to rivals like the Lofree Flow84 (550g) and NuPhy Air75 V3 (748g).

Visually, the Luma84 embraces a dual-toned minimalist aesthetic. The White Purple model tested features mostly white keycaps with two purple accents, creating a subtle yet stylish look. The anodized aluminum case resists scratches and corrosion, while double-shot PBT keycaps add durability and a soft, premium touch. Despite its compact size, the keyboard feels solid, with no flex in the body and a reassuring sturdiness under heavy typing.

User Experience

Software

Customization is one of the Luma84’s strongest features. Unlike Epomaker’s older proprietary software, which could feel clunky, the Luma84 is QMK-enabled and fully compatible with VIA’s web-based interface. This makes it easy to remap keys, record macros, adjust RGB lighting, and flash firmware directly from a browser, without installing third-party apps. For users restricted by work devices—such as MacBook users who can’t install external software—this is a huge advantage. The clean interface and cross-platform support make personalization straightforward and accessible.

Portability and Design

The Epomaker Luma84 excels in portability thanks to its compact dimensions and lightweight build. This makes it one of the most travel‑friendly aluminum keyboards available, perfect for users who need performance on the go.

Durability and Aesthetics

The anodized aluminum case and PBT keycaps ensure long‑lasting durability. At the same time, the minimalist design looks refined without being flashy, striking a balance between elegance and practicality. Of course with RGB lighting on, it can be quite flashy, but that can be disabled if you wish to do so, and I’d rather have it than not.

Typing Experience

Typing on the Luma84 is a joy due to the Gateron LP 2.0 switches. They deliver crisp responsiveness and satisfying feedback, making everyday use and extended typing sessions comfortable and engaging.

Acoustics

The aluminum top case prevents the hollow sound often found in plastic decks. This results in a more solid and premium typing sound profile, enhancing the overall user experience.

Customization

VIA support makes customization seamless across platforms. Users can easily remap keys, adjust macros, and personalize lighting, ensuring the keyboard adapts to a wide range of workflows and preferences

The Bad

Ergonomics

The lack of adjustable height undermines the ergonomic benefits of the Luma84’s low‑profile switches. Without the ability to change the typing angle, the keyboard remains flat, which can feel less comfortable during long typing sessions.

Switch Options

Switch choice is restricted to Reds or Browns, limiting flexibility for enthusiasts. Those who prefer clicky or silent switches must purchase aftermarket replacements, which adds extra cost and effort.

Sound Profile

The sound profile is less polished compared to competitors. Noticeable rattling and metallic pinging detract from the otherwise enjoyable typing experience, making the acoustics feel less refined. It’s still good, but there are better options out there.

Battery Life

While its compact build is great to have, the battery life is not. This may be attributed to the rather small 3000mAh capacity but generally, you’re looking at about 20 or so hours of battery life with RGB on. It’s said that the battery life can go as high as 130 hours with RGB light off, but it would be a shame to not have the lights on while you can.

Epomaker Luma84 Verdict

The Epomaker Luma84 is a strong contender in the low-profile mechanical keyboard space, offering premium design, portability, and customization at a relatively affordable price. Its aluminum build, responsive switches, and VIA support make it ideal for typists who value durability and flexibility. However, compromises in ergonomics, switch variety, and acoustics mean it isn’t the perfect all-rounder. These issues don’t ruin the keyboard, but they do prevent it from reaching the refinement of rivals like the NuPhy Air75 V3 or Lofree Flow84.
