Could Sony Be Looking to Acquire Konami to Bolster PS5 Offerings?
As you may know by now, Microsoft has acquire Bethesda for a large sum of money in an effort to bolster their 1st party games offering. Given the situation, many gamers expect Sony Interactive Entertainment to fire back with something major. Could Konami be that ace in the hole to fortify their PS5 games offering? Let’s find out.
Could Sony Be Looking to Acquire Konami to Bolster PS5 Offerings?
With the news of Bethesda’s acquisition sending shockwaves throughout the games industry, many PlayStation fans are calling Sony Interactive Entertainment out to do something just as big, if not bigger. One of the top suggestions by fans that trended worldwide on Twitter is the potential acquisition of Japanese game publisher Konami.
This may seem unlikely and more of a fan’s dream than anything else, but we have come close it before. Previously rumours have surfaced from an alleged Konami employee on 4chan, who divulged that Sony Interactive Entertainment is interested in purchasing a number of the publisher’s IPs. This includes Metal Gear, Castlevania, and Silent Hill. Even if it doesn’t actually happen, it doesn’t mean that Sony can’t propose an exclusivity deal with the publisher.
One of the more recent, yet persistent, rumours that have been circulating is an alleged deal to develop a Silent Hill game exclusively for the PS5. It is said to be in development over at Sony’s Japan Studio and will be announced later this year. Unfortunately, there is no concrete evidence just yet so it might not necessarily be true. With that being said however, there’s no harm in waiting, and it could develop into something bigger between the two companies.
We know that Sony Interactive Entertainment still has plans to acquire more gaming companies, but it’s uncertain whether it will be on a similar scale as Microsoft’s move to acquire Bethesda. If there are already a solid amount of games coming to the PS5, they don’t really need a major acquisition. For now, the momentum appears to be on the Xbox Series X, at least seemingly.
