The recent Galaxy Unpacked lacked the β€˜One more thing’ element once the new Galaxy Z foldables were announced, which left people wonder what happened to the tri-fold concept that ended up being a no-show. According to Korea Times, Samsung’s smartphone division head TM Roh says this new foldable is to be expected β€œwithin this year.”

The Korean smartphone giant is actually behind the competition in this regard. Earlier this year, Chinese smartphone maker HUAWEI launched the Mate XT, the world’s first tri-fold smartphone and so far the only model available in the market with this form factor. Samsung technically has the answer for it – the company showcased its G Flex concept earlier at MWC Barcelona, and even at the first Unpacked event in 2025 when it unveiled the Galaxy S25 series.

However, the viability of such a form factor remains a question mark among Samsung’s executives. One such executive told Android Authority: β€œWe’ve had a tri-fold for some time, designed and everything. So it’s not a new concept to us. What we’re debating is the viability. When I say the viability, is there really a demand for this form factor?” Regardless, the device in question was reported to feature a 10-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, 200MP main camera, and a cost of over 400 million Korean Won (~RM12,393).

It was reported that the foldable could use the name β€œGalaxy G Fold” when it launches later this year, although this is yet to be decided, Roh said. β€œWe are now focusing on perfecting the product and its usability, but we have not decided its name. As the product nears completion, we are planning to make a final decision soon.” Personally, I don’t think the name β€œGalaxy G Fold” is going to stick, since pronouncing β€˜Z’ and β€˜G’ may cause confusion for North American speakers (β€˜Z’ over there is usually pronounced as β€˜zee’).

Pokdepinion: I’m sure people with deep enough pockets would want one of these.
