Nothing has announced the Phone (3a) Community Edition, a limited variant of the Phone (3a) developed through its Community Edition Project, which is an initiative that involves fans directly in shaping product design, software elements, accessories, and marketing. According to the smartphone maker, the program ran for nine months and received more than 700 submissions from participants across multiple creative disciplines.

Unlike conventional feedback-driven product development, the Community Edition Project is structured to integrate selected contributors into the production process. Four contributors were selected this year to work with Nothing’s internal teams in London across hardware design, accessories, software interface design, and marketing.

The hardware and packaging design draws visual cues from late-1990s and early-2000s consumer products, which ultimately gives the smartphone the teal color with neighboring palettes as accents. Meanwhile, the accessory introduced for this edition is a box of dice designed using Nothing’s typography and design language. On the software side, the Community Edition includes a custom lock screen clock design intended to prioritize readability, alongside exclusive wallpapers designed to visually connect the device’s external colors.

The marketing campaign developed for the project, dubbed β€˜Made Together’, was said to β€œcelebrates the concept of collaboration itself”, rather than focusing on a specific phone design (for example, conventional wisdom says most phones are marketed for its camera, gaming, or even AI capabilities). This slogan echoes that of airplane maker Boeing’s famously-known β€œWorking Together” tagline that represented its golden era back in the 80s.

Nothing also stated that the Community Edition Project is part of a broader effort to involve users more directly in company decisions, alongside initiatives such as a Community Board Observer and a recent community investment round. The company opened a $5 million community funding round at its Series C valuation, offering access to supporters through regulated crowdfunding platforms starting 10 December, with wider access from 11 December.

The Phone (3a) Community Edition is based on the Phone (3a) with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, with production limited to 1,000 units worldwide. Registration is open from 9 to 11 December, followed by a limited sales window starting 12 December via Nothing’s official website and selected retail partners. In Malaysia, the device is priced at RM1,699.
