The Sony Alpha 7 V (Ι‘7 V if you prefer that way) is officially here: as the fifth-generation model in the Alpha 7 full-frame mirrorless series, the new camera features a new partially stacked sensor design, updated BIONZ XR2 engine, along with several more feature upgrades.

The new Alpha 7 introduces a new partially stacked 33-megapixel (effective) Exmor RS CMOS sensor that provides approximately 4.5x faster readout over predecessor, enabling blackout-free continuous shooting at up to 30 fps with AF/AE tracking in both standard and 14-bit RAW modes. The camera also carries a Pre-Capture function that records up to one second before the shutter is pressed, useful when dealing with unpredictable scenarios.

Sony updates the Ι‘7 V with the new BIONZ XR2 image processor with an AI processing unit that results in 30% faster real-time autofocus. The system uses 759 phase-detection points and offers up to 94% frame coverage, maintaining subject recognition even at ultra-low exposure bias of EV -4.0. Despite its stacked sensor design, Sony managed to fit 16 stops of dynamic range; the camera also features AI-based Auto White Balance that identifies light sources and maintains stable color reproduction throughout the capture.

For video creators, the camera offers new 4K modes including 7K oversampled 4K 60p in full-frame and 4K 120p in APS-C/Super 35mm crop, supported by full pixel readout without pixel binning. Taking the ideas from action cameras, Dynamic Active Mode uses extra sensor room to improve handheld stability, and Auto Framing uses the same principle to maintains subject composition through AI recognition. There’s also a new in-camera noise reduction and improved internal mic which further limits background noise and interference.

The Alpha 7 V adds Wi-Fi 6E connectivity, dual USB-C ports, vertical shooting support, and an adjustable electronic shutter sound (meaning you can take photos quietly, if that’s needed). Sony also brought Ι‘7R V’s 4-axis display with tilt and vari-angle mechanisms for greater flexibility, and the body also gets updated grip design to improve handling. The same NP-FZ100 battery can now last longer thanks to power efficiency improvements, which is claimed to be capable of taking approximately 630 still images when using the OLED EVF, or 750 using the LCD display.

Besides the camera, Sony is also introducing the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II lens, designed as a compact and lightweight option for both stills and video, supports up to 120 fps AF/AE tracking with compatible bodies. The lens provides coordinated image stabilization, autofocus during zooming, as well as built-in breathing compensation support.

Sony Malaysia announces that the Alpha 7 V body will be available from mid-December 2025 priced at RM11,999, while the Alpha 7 V M-kit and the FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS II lens will arrive in February 2026.

Pokdepinion: Pretty significant upgrade, all things considered.
