In case youβve been living under a rock for the past few years, the simple idea of cars driving around and playing soccer blew up into this really major video game calledΒ Rocket League. After initially releasing in 2015,Β Rocket LeagueΒ slowly became a worldwide phenomenon and now boasts one of the largest on most frequent player bases in gaming.
Just how big is this player base though, you ask? Well, developer Psyonix today announced that over the course ofΒ Rocket LeagueβsΒ life, they have now surpassed 40 million players worldwide across all platforms. Not too shabby when remembering just how quietΒ Rocket LeagueΒ was when it released nearly three years ago.
Of course, being on virtually every platform has surely helpedΒ Rocket LeagueΒ reach these highest of highs. The recent release ofΒ the gameΒ on the Nintendo Switch last year made the game now available on all current-generation platforms. Plus, with theΒ steady stream of updates that Psyonix is constantly pushing out for the game, theyβve ensured that players will continue to return time and time again while maybe bringing new friends into the fold as well.
Rocket LeagueβsΒ rise from being a small indie project to exploding into one of the premiere eSports titles in the world is definitely one of the most endearing and encouraging arcs weβve seen in the industry over the past few years. Whatβs craziest is that the game doesnβt seem to be slowing down any time soon, either, so it wouldnβt be a shock to seeΒ the gameΒ surpass another major milestone similar to this by yearβs end.
Pokdepinion: Honestly, Iβm surprised Rocket League is still going strong given how the attention has shifted to games like PUBG. Either way, Iβm happy to see another indie success story.
