Itβs the end of the year again, and as per usual, Google has released its Year in Search 2025 report, summarizing the topics, events, and personalities that recorded the highest increases in search interest among Malaysians. This year can be seen as one involving living costs, the growing role of AI, along with major news events and the usual trending stuffs in popular entertainment.
Year In Search 2025: Hereβs The List

During the year, Malaysians turned to Google Search for information on rising living expenses, government assistance, and public programs, with Rahmah Cash Contribution ranking among the most searched terms and leading news-related queries. Other welfare initiatives, including MyKasih and the Budi95 targeted fuel subsidy scheme, also saw strong search activity as users looked for details on eligibility, application processes, and payment schedules. Major domestic incidents also drove search traffic, with events such as the Putra Heights pipeline explosion and flooding in southern Selangor ranking among the most searched local news topics.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is another category featured prominently in 2025 search trends, with Googleβs own AI assistant Gemini topping the overall trending ranking; oddly, its main rival ChatGPT didnβt make the main trending list at all, while mentions of ChatGPT 4.0 landed fifth under the AI category. (Perhaps chatgpt.com is simply an easier way to access?) Video-generation platforms like Pixverse and Sora also gained attention among users, although it must be said that despite its popularity, much of the question relating to AIβs negative effects in the creative industry remain unanswered today.

Entertainment-related searches highlighted continued interest in both international and regional titles, with films such as Blood Brothers, Superman, and Thunderbolts leading movie-related searches, while franchises including Jurassic World Rebirth and Mission: Impossible β The Final Reckoning also ranked highly. Local dramas such as Keluarga Itu and Dia Bukan Syurga remained popular alongside global series including Squid Game (which concluded its final season) and Emerald Hill (a new sequel from Singaporeβs legendary period drama, The Little Nyoya, which originally aired in 2008).
Search trends related to public figures showed a mix of local and international interest, with Malaysian singer Amira Othman leading the People category, followed by figures such as activist Greta Thunberg and Indonesian actress Luna Maya, as well as renewed attention towards bands like My Chemical Romance following concert announcements. Of course, Americaβs much-controversial president Donald Trump easily makes the list since his successful re-election late last year, and local politician (also Muar MP) Syed Saddiq is among the most-searched this year, too.
