Windows 11 24H2 Update Gives Preferential Treatment To Copilot+ PCs

The upcoming yearly Windows 11 update will be a rather odd one: Microsoft is splitting its upcoming 24H2 into two groups, one for Copilot+ PCs, and the other being everything else. The latter group will not be receiving the new update today, whereas the former category is currently shipping with 24H2 update pre-installed (sans Recall, of course).

Wait For 24H2 (Unless You Own Copilot+ PCs)

This preferential treatment is reserved to a very small number of laptops, and all of them are currently powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series SoCs. This chip family is currently the only one that qualifies for Copilot+ PC designation, as AMD and Intel’s offering will not be launching until at least July (Intel’s Lunar Lake may be even later than AMD’s Strix Point launch).

Windows 11’s 24H2 update brings some major features – but unfortunately, it’s mostly exclusive to the aforementioned laptops. For everyone else, this update is expected to bring under-the-hood improvements for the most part, including Wi-Fi 7 support, native 7-Zip & TAR compression support, HDR background support, automatic BitLocker encryption on new installs, and others – so realistically, you aren’t missing much.

The update is also marred by the controversy surrounding its flagship feature, Recall, as Microsoft is scrambling to rework the feature amid severe privacy concerns, so it’s not too surprising to say some people are already not looking forward to this update. Still, unless you have already bought a Copilot+ PC this week, you won’t have to worry about Recall when it eventually gets launched sometime later this year. Those without Copilot+ PCs are expected to receive the 24H2 update this fall.

Pokdepinion: Seems like an odd choice to split update into two groups. Perhaps Microsoft couldn’t wait to push its AI features (and look how it backfired on them now).
