Apple has announced the Mini Apps Partner Program that offers reduced App Store commissions from in-app purchases. As opposed to the standard 30% rate for fully-fledged apps, mini apps are subjected to 15% rate instead.
Apple Mini Apps Partner Program

Per Apple, these mini apps are βself-contained experiencesβ built with web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript, hence no installation is involved. Chinaβs WeChat is famously known for βmini programsβ that functions in similar ways, and in our case, the Touch βn Go eWallet app mostly operates this way, too. These mini apps/programs can be designated for many specific features, such as delivery, ride hailing, payments, and more.
As The Verge pointed out, this move is likely a result of a deal signed with Tencent β owners of WeChat β amid regulatory pressure from United States for the antitrust lawsuit alleging the software giant for monopolizing the market, with the stifling of super apps supposedly being one of the tactics involved. Under this deal, Apple takes a 15% cut from purchases made in WeChat mini programs.
To be eligible, developers of these apps must βsupport certain App Store technologies,β including the Declared Age Range API and the Advanced Commerce API, which are intended to βprovide a safe and seamless experienceβ across different age groups.
