Per Apple, these mini apps are β€œself-contained experiences” built with web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript, hence no installation is involved. China’s WeChat is famously known for β€œmini programs” that functions in similar ways, and in our case, the Touch β€˜n Go eWallet app mostly operates this way, too. These mini apps/programs can be designated for many specific features, such as delivery, ride hailing, payments, and more.

As The Verge pointed out, this move is likely a result of a deal signed with Tencent – owners of WeChat – amid regulatory pressure from United States for the antitrust lawsuit alleging the software giant for monopolizing the market, with the stifling of super apps supposedly being one of the tactics involved. Under this deal, Apple takes a 15% cut from purchases made in WeChat mini programs.

To be eligible, developers of these apps must β€œsupport certain App Store technologies,” including the Declared Age Range API and the Advanced Commerce API, which are intended to β€œprovide a safe and seamless experience” across different age groups.
