Most people are familiar with Task Manager, the popular tool in Windows that stops any apps ended up unresponsive; Google Chrome has a similar feature that targets misbehaving tabs as well. However, until now it has been a feature only found on PC versions, though recent findings suggest it’s coming to mobile versions.
Chrome Task Manager Coming To Android?
As reported by Android Authority, user @Leopeva64 has found references in code that suggest Chrome for Android (codenamed ‘Clank’) will feature Task Manager. For reference, the desktop version’s Task Manager can report various metrics of each tab, including CPU, memory, and network usage; it’s also an easier way of tracking down tabs or extensions that may cause performance issues, which can’t be easily identified in the Windows counterpart.
That being said, this is merely code found in the Chromium codebase, as nothing suggests that this feature is currently under testing. Tabs causing freezes are also less common due to the more tightly controlled software (as Chrome on Android doesn’t support extensions at all), so a feature like this is less likely to be needed. Still, it can be a good solution if you don’t want to terminate the entire app all at once should the trouble happens.
For now, you can enable this feature on Canary versions of Chrome Android by entering #enable-task-manager-clank in the URL and select ‘Enabled’ in the drop-down menu.
Pokdepinion: It’s been a while since I last used Chrome given that I daily drive Samsung Internet with extensions – but I have yet to see tabs causing major problems in the browser thus far.
