A Florida Teen Has Set An Unofficial Fastest Typing World Record At 293 WPM

A 16-year-old Florida resident by the Internet alias of MythicalRocket has set an unofficial typing record of 293 words per minute over a 15-second burst. The unofficial record-setter uploaded a video showing his endeavor achieving 293 wpm with near-perfect 97% spelling accuracy on Monkeytype on 30 April.
MythicalRocket strictly speaking isn’t just some random guy in one American state that you find many weird things happening (just ask the Internet what “Florida Man” is all about): in fact, he’s already been doing speed typing for a few years by now. His keyboard of choice? A full-size SteelSeries Apex Pro with optical switches – though he thinks the switches makes little difference in speed.
In a Twitter DM with Tom’s Hardware, he said: “I used to use the (SteelSeries) Apex 7, which is basically the Apex Pro but with brown switches, and I was pretty much just as fast (…) the switch initially took a while to get used to, but after a few weeks, I got back up to speed.” He also says that SteelSeries keyboards are “pretty much” the only thing he uses. He also says the low-profile Logitech G915 (renamed as G913 in Malaysian markets) isn’t what he likes due to the low-profile nature of the switches.
Many speed typists went with more efficient layouts such as Dvorak or Colemak – and he knows Colemak and Canary layouts too (which he also achieved 200+ WPM on). However, his record run actually uses the ubiquitous QWERTY layout – and apparently the layout “isn’t actually all that bad”, he says.
As of right now, the official Guinness World Record holder belongs to Barbara Blackburn at 212 WPM with Dvorak layout – which has since been unofficially beaten numerous times – though MythicalRocket seemingly has no plans to contact the organization in order to validate his record attempts.
