AMD Gaming Super Resolution is Team Redβs answer to NVIDIA DLSS?
NVIDIA enjoys a nice lead in terms of performance with its DLSS capabilities, allowing gamers to play at higher frame rates with some AI smarts. AMD is definitely not taking it lying down this time around, with them previously announcing FidelityFX Super Resolution, or FSR for short. But whatβs this patent for Gaming Super Resolution filed by AMD?
We arenβt sure whether Gaming Super Resolution (GSR) is going to be a part of FidelityFX Super Resolution, or itβs an entirely different feature altogether, but it does seem pretty interesting. The patent claims that it will use deep-learning based linear and non-linear upscaling networks that will preserve the image quality while also delivering higher frame rates.
Somehow AMD also takes a dig at NVIDIAβs DLSS technology in the patent, claiming that the existing deep-learning linear upscaling approaches donβt take into account the aspects of the original image, which can lead to corrupt or blurry images, and general loss of detail. We do know that this is untrue in the case of DLSS 2.0, but we definitely hope that AMD can live up to their claims.
AMD might also be planning to rollout Gaming Super Resolution (or FSR) across multiple platforms, as they explicitly mentioned that it would work on a computer, handheld device, set-top box, a TV, mobile phone or tablet. We might even see it being a feature in the devices with the upcoming Samsung Exynos chipsets, which will sport an AMD RDNA-based GPU.
While itβs exciting, thereβs no specific timeline for AMD FidelityFX Super Resolutionβs release. Scott Herkelman, CVP & GM at AMD Radeon, only shared that it will be available this year, but also mentioned that thereβs βa lot more work ahead of usβ during a March 2021 interview.
Pokdepinion: FSR sounds like a great idea to boost the performance on lower-end graphics solutions, like consoles.
