DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 brings DisplayPort 2.0 to USB4 and USB-C devices

The USB-C port is probably one of the most versatile ports now, with it supporting everything from data transfer to display output. Well, now it has gotten even better, with VESA announcing the latest update to the DisplayPort Alt Mode Spec. DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 adds interoperability with USB4 and offer all the features of DisplayPort 2.0 over USB-C.
That includes support for beyond-8K resolutions, HDR and high refresh rates. DisplayPort 2.0 offers the capability to deliver uncompressed 8K@60 Hz HDR visuals with 30 bits per pixel (bpp), or 16K@60 Hz HDR with 30 bpp, compressed. For gamers, prepare to ogle at 4K@144 Hz, complete with HDR. Thanks to DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, those capabilities are now available to the USB ecosystem.
The USB-C connector will transmit a maximum payload of 77.37 Gbps with DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 when all four high-speed lanes are used for carrying DisplayPort video data, or half that when used concurrently with SuperSpeed USB data delivery.
Don’t get all excited so soon though, as VESA expects the first products to incorporate the new DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0 standard to appear in 2021.
