A New AMD Socket Is Coming Soon In The Form Of Socket AM5+
It looks like we have an answer to what will be Socket AM5’s successor: according to hardware detective HXL’s latest findings (posted on X/Twitter). References to AMD “Socket AM5+” have been found recently using the MC Extractor tool, which is used to look into CPU microcodes.
As listed on Github, the tool has listed ‘Adjusted AMD microcode pattern for AM5+’ and ‘AMD microcode CPUID 00B40Fxx detection’ as part of the changelog. The ID ’00B40Fxx’ could point to AMD Granite Ridge or Fire Range processors according to HXL. For reference, the former is expected to consist of Zen5-based Ryzen 9000 desktop processors, while the latter is the adapted mobile variant under the hypothetical Ryzen 9x55HX series for high-performance gaming laptops.
However, there is no direct evidence that the CPU architecture is related to the new socket, and this can be simply a coincidence. But what is Socket AM5+ anyway? So far, nothing points to a completely new, mechanically and electrically incompatible socket – and it is possible that AM5+ is a small update to AM5 that makes use of the unused contact pins among the 1,718 available in LGA (land grid array) form factor.
AMD has publicly promised that Socket AM5 will remain in support through 2025 and beyond, so assuming Team Red keeps its word, we could be seeing the new socket soonest by 2026. Given its track record, we may see continued support for Socket AM5 as it gets relegated to the budget segment when Socket AM5+ eventually takes the lead – just like Socket AM4 which still receives new models to this day.

Pokdepinion: I wonder if there will be backwards compatibility for this. Like, regular AM5 CPU on AM5+ motherboards, with reduced capabilities? Like Threadripper 7000?
