AMD Reportedly Working On Ryzen 7045HX “Dragon Range” CPUs With Lower Clocks

AMD’s Ryzen 7045HX series (Dragon Range) is one of the highest performing laptop chips you can find on the market today, featuring a maximum of 16 Zen 4 cores at disposal for heavy compute needs. (There’s even a X3D version called 7945HX3D as well.) According to leaks, AMD may be looking to add more models into this lineup in the near future.

The leak comes from none other than prominent CPU leaker Golden Pig Upgrade (金猪升级包), which in their Bilibili post states:

“Why is AMD slapping my face again [crying emoji]? They just said Dragon Range wouldn’t be updated next year, but now they’re telling me they’re going to release 7940/7840HX, with no difference to 7045HX aside from slightly lower frequencies.

Though it’s still labeled as 7000 (series) which means it’s a 2023 model, so technically I’m not getting face-slapped”

In essence, the 7940HX and 7840HX will essentially be underclocked versions of 7945HX and 7845HX respectively, with all other things equal. Though, given that we’re nearing the end of 2023, labeling it as 7000 series has to mean it will be launching this year – as per AMD’s latest naming conventions (‘7’ stands for portfolio year 2023, ‘8’ for 2024, and so on). One theory is that these new chips are expected to be sold at a lower price to OEMs to bolster more design wins for Team Red, in hopes to put more competition against Intel’s 13th Gen (and upcoming 14th Gen) chips.

Pokdepinion: This can be advantageous for AMD if these chip does indeed undercut Intel’s chips to secure more design wins, and should provide more value to the end user as well.
