A new budget iPhone has just been revealed by Apple, designated as iPhone 17e β which serves as the entry-level model on the smartphone makerβs iPhone 17 lineup. While it looks identical to the predecessor it replaces, the upgrades are all internal, involving new A19 chipset, upgraded base storage to 256GB, stronger display glass, and MagSafe support.
Meet iPhone 17e

The 3nm-based A19 chip powering the iPhone 17e is the same found in the standard iPhone 17, short for cutting down an extra GPU core with the chipset comprising a 6-core CPU and a 4-core GPU instead. Another chipset upgrade involves Appleβs in-house C1X mobile modem, said to deliver up to twice the speed of C1 in iPhone 16e while improving power efficiency.
Display remains unchanged, however. That means the new budget iPhone features the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with 1200 nits peak HDR brightness (and the same unsightly notch), though it does get the new Ceramic Shield 2 glass found on the iPhone 17 to protect against cracks and scratches. Camera is another aspect that remains identical, as Apple retains the same 48MP Fusion camera in a single-camera configuration β a rarity in smartphones these days.

iPhone 17e also introduces MagSafe support for the first time with support for Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W. Like regular iPhones that already supports it, all MagSafe accessories (i.e. battery packs, wallets, flip stands) will work on this model as well. Storage-wise, Apple has done away with 128GB storage option, effectively making 256GB as the new base storage option while keeping the same starting price, showing that the company can still absorb the price pressure caused the current memory shortage.
iPhone 17e will be available in black, white and soft pink, with storage options of 256GB and 512GB, starting at RM2,999. Pre-orders begin 4 March at 10:15PM MYT, with availability from 11 March in Malaysia and more than 70 countries and regions. Silicone and clear MagSafe cases will be available for RM239.
Pokdepinion: MagSafe is a big upgrade, despite unchanged designs.
