Malaysian users of Apple Watches will now get a new health monitoring feature designed to identify signs of chronic high blood pressure – when possible undiagnosed hypertension has been identified, Apple Watch will alert user with hypertension notifications and advise them to further monitor the condition, and seek medical help as needed.

Apple Watch Introduces Hypertension Notification

This hypertension detection feature takes data from the watch’s optical heart sensor to assess how blood vessels respond to heartbeats and reviews patterns over 30-day periods, relying on the machine learning and training data from over 100,000 participants. Users with Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later models will be able to access this feature – those with Apple Watch SE will not get this feature, however.

Of course, wearables cannot replace professional medical monitoring, and Apple made it clear that the system does not diagnose hypertension, but only provides alerts that encourage users to seek further medical assessment (ultimately, only medical professionals can make a diagnosis). The company claimed that this alone could notify over one million people with previously undiagnosed hypertension within its first year of global availability.

Users who receive a notification are advised to measure their blood pressure for seven days using a third-party blood pressure cuff and share the results with a healthcare professional. Some caveats: the feature is not intended for individuals under 22 years old, those previously diagnosed with hypertension, or during pregnancy. Hypertension notifications can be enabled through the Health app on iPhone 11 or newer, with Wrist Detection feature enabled.
