While the first wave of flagships sporting Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipsets is rolling out in these few weeks, Qualcomm has also brought the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 that comes without the β€˜Elite’ branding. As the second-in-line in terms of segmentation, this should act as the direct successor of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, focusing on the wallet-friendly class of flagships.

The processor of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset is laid out in a 2X+6P configuration – same as the Elite variant – all downclocked with two 3.8GHz Qualcomm Oryon cores paired with six 3.32GHz Oryon cores. It’s paired with an unnamed Adreno GPU (earlier leaks suggest it’s named Adreno 829) that is claimed to be 11% faster than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Other numbers include (when compared to SD8 Gen 3): 46% faster Hexagon NPU, 36% faster CPU, up to 13% overall SoC power savings, while the new FastConnect 7900 connectivity module is expected to slash gaming latency in half with β€œAI-enhanced Wi-Fi”. There’s also the new Qualcomm Sensing Hub feature that allows AI assistants to be activated by simply detecting movements, like lifting the phone to speak.

The chipmaker says the first wave of models featuring this chipset will be from brands like iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, and vivo. In particular, OnePlus will be the first to debut the chipset in a smartphone with the upcoming OnePlus 15R, launching globally on December 17.

Pokdepinion: Practically speaking, the Elite and non-Elite chip should have virtually no difference unless you look at benchmark numbers.
