DJI has introduced the new Osmo Action 6 action camera, featuring variable aperture lens for the first time in its lineup, along with a new 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensor and a series of updates aimed at improving low-light capture, exposure control and multi-platform content production.
DJI Osmo Action 6

The Osmo Action 6 is DJIβs first action camera to feature a variable aperture, ranging from f/2.0 to f/4.0 β by default, the aperture adjusts automatically based on scene conditions, though under f/4.0 user can enable Starburst mode which produces a specific lens flare. Behind the 155Β° FOV lens is the new custom 1/1.1-inch, 4:3 aspect CMOS sensor (native resolution 7168 x 5376) delivers up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and supports 4K/120fps recording in a 4:3 format.
Thereβs a reason why DJI opted for a square-shaped sensor for the Osmo Action 6: in video recording, a new 4K Custom mode allows footage to be reframed into multiple aspect ratios, as the sensorβs native resolution is larger than a standard widescreen 4K (3840 x 2160) in both orientations. That extra pixel headroom also allowed its HorizonSteady stabilization feature (which compensates for diagonal shaking) to increase the max resolution from 2.7K to 4K. It also supports native 4K/120fps slow motion, though its 960fps super slow-mo playback works only at 1080p through frame interpolation (via a 240fps source).

DJI naturally offers several add-on accessories, which includes a new macro lens, FOV Boost lens (182Β° FOV), and a diving case that increases the maximum operating depth from 20 meters without case, down to 60 meters. Its 1950mAh / 7.5Wh battery remain rated for 4 hours of use (charges to 80% in 22 minutes), while onboard storage is increased to 50GB, although you can still use a microSD card up to 1TB in size if you want more. Also new is the Gesture control as a second method of hands-free operation.
The DJI Osmo Action 6 is available for order from the DJI online store and authorized retailers, with shipments beginning immediately. It comes in two configurations: the Standard Combo priced at RM2,079, which includes the camera, a battery, mounting accessories and a USB-C cable. The Adventure Combo, priced at RM2,569, adds two additional batteries, extra mounting components, a multifunctional battery case and a 1.5-meter extension rod.
Pokdepinion: The new square sensor is a solid upgrade for sure.
