Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 Is Here To Lead The Midrange Segment

Smartphone chipmaker Qualcomm is launching a second chip in the span of a few days, this time the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3. As for why the company decided to split the launch, it reasoned that both chips β€œneeded their own moment in time.” However, both chips are functionally similar to each other, despite being placed in different product tiers.

Comparing the 8s Gen 3 and 7+ Gen 3 you’ll get some similarities here and differences there. For one, both feature the same 1+4+3 core configuration, though the 7+ Gen 3 is tuned for slightly lower clocks across the board. The difference, meanwhile, lies in the feature set – and these include the GenAI photo expansion, AI modem RF, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and more.

A more direct comparison would be against the chip’s predecessor – the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. The newer chip is claimed to be 15% faster on CPU, while the Adrena GPU boasts a sizeable 45% boost (Qualcomm also chose to not disclose the detailed specs for this GPU). Power efficiency also gets a small 5% gain, while AI processing has seen performance improvements ranging from 20-45% depending on the nature of the workload.

Aside from that, the 7+ Gen 3 also brings features that are new to the 7-series, including Spectra Cognitive Triple 18-bit ISP (meaning it now supports triple-camera processing), real-time semantic segmentation, in-game post-processing accelerator (i.e. motion blur, bloom), Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2 upscaling, 5G Release 17 support, and most prominently, Wi-Fi 7 with HBS (high band simultaneous) multi-link support – which combines two high-speed channels for improved signal stability.

Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3 will first be featured in OnePlus, realme, and SHARP devices set to be announced in the coming months. Expect these devices to fall around the $400-600 price range, occupying the premium midrange segment.
