Qualcommβs Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is set to be the first SoC to adopt custom Nuvia cores. While the chip isnβt expected to launch until 2024, leaked multi-threaded performance numbers reveal a significant jump in comparison to Appleβs M2. According to the leaked specifications, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be based on the N3E process and deliver improved power efficiency and performance numbers over the first iteration.
The SoC is rumoured to adopt two βNuvia Phoenixβ performance cores and six βNuvia Phoenix Mβ efficiency cores, which could deliver up to a 40% multi-core performance improvement compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
While the M2 can achieve between 8,800 and 9,000 points in Geekbench 5, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 can break the 9,000 points barrier. The chipset is expected to surpass the performance of the M2 with two Nuvia Phoenix cores and six Nuvia Phoenix M cores. In comparison, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 can reach 6,500 points in the same benchmark. The chip is expected to be power-efficient due to mass production on TSMCβs N3E process.
Qualcomm is also reportedly working on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, which is expected to power compact and lightweight notebooks. The chip has a 12-core CPU with eight performance cores and four power-efficiency cores. According to leaked specifications, the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4 will support external GPU and NVMe.
The leaked specifications are yet to be confirmed, so itβs advised to take these details with a pinch of salt until official confirmation. However, if the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 indeed performs as rumoured, it will be a significant boost to the flagship SoC market.
Pokdepinion: Weβre still quite a ways away from the flagship chip but itβs good to learn some of these details early to give us a rough expectation. Then again, things could always change even if the information is indeed legitimate so we will just have to wait and see.
