Xiaomi: chip shortage may lead to price increases

Previously, we had ASUS hinting at price hikes for their graphics cards due to the shortage on the current-gen GPUs. Now, it seems Xiaomi will also be looking down a similar path, as the global chip shortage doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

Xiaomi’s president Wang Xiang mentioned that they might be forced to pass on the increased costs brought about by the shortage to consumers during the Q4 2020 earnings call. He did stress that Xiaomi “will continue to optimize the costs” though, which should alleviate some worries.

Still, there’s only so much that Xiaomi can do, considering their narrow profit margins for each device sold. While Xiaomi will probably try to avoid raising their prices, it is probably going to be inevitable. What remains to be seen is which devices will see their prices raised, and by how much.
