How to Enable Dark Mode on Gmail and Google Maps for Android and iOS
Iβm sure many of you have developed a fondness for Dark mode / Dark theme. Itβs pleasant for the eyes and your deviceβs battery life. If youβve been wondering whether it can be enabled on Gmail and Google Maps, then wonder no more. It is indeed possible now.
The implementation didnβt have a huge announcement but instead, was seen from the official Gmail Twitter account in the form of a reply. As you can see from the tweet, the feature is rolling out for users running Android 10 and iOS 11 or higher.
If youβre wondering how to enable it, hereβs exactly what you need to do:
iOS Users
- If you are on iOS 13, you can toggle the system-wide Dark Mode inΒ Settings > Display & Brightness > AppearanceΒ and tap onΒ Dark
- Alternatively, you can go to theΒ Theme tabΒ (only available for those with the update) in the Gmail app, and turn it on there
- If youβve got iOS 11 or 12, you can openΒ Gmail and head to theΒ SettingsΒ tab to turn on dark mode
- For Google Maps, do the same thing you would on Gmail to enable it
Android Users
- If you are on Android 10, head toΒ Settings > Display > Theme
- If you own a Google Pixel device, turningΒ Battery SaverΒ on also turns on system-wide Dark Mode
- Alternatively, head to theΒ ThemeΒ tab in Gmail to toggle it (only available for those with the update)
- For Google Maps, do the same thing you would on Gmail to enable it
If it doesnβt work for you, itβs either youβre not on the right OS version, or your app hasnβt been updated yet. In which case, just be a little bit patient as itβs slowly making its way out to everyone.

Pokdepinion: Now to wait for it to roll out to Android Pie. That or wait for Android 10 to roll out for my smartphone. Either way works for me.

Not on my device yet still waiting and hoping. Samsung Galaxy A7 2017 running Android Oreo. Can’t update to pie or 10. Really want dark mode on my Gmail app. Hate Stark White mode
Hi Saul,
You’re gonna need to be on Android 10 for it to work at the moment. They will be rolling it out for other versions as well soon so we’ll update the article accordingly when it’s out :D
