FSP M580 Review (ft. VITA GM 850W & ZENFAN) – Easy Setup, Great Value

Today we’re taking a look at FSP M580, a mid-size case that primarily focus on mATX motherboards with the contemporary curved panoramic glass design that you often see in new cases released this year. Unpacking the box reveals just two things: the case and the user guide itself. We found out later in the setup process that the screws and accessories are stored within the case.

Walkaround

As far as panoramic glass-based designs go, the FSP M580’s general layout is pretty standard, although it opted for moving the power supply bracket rearward instead of at the bottom like most ATX cases do. The case comes pre-installed with three bottom intake fans and three side intake fans by default, although as seen in the images above, there’s a seventh fan pre-installed along with a PSU inside as well. These are local market exclusives here in Malaysia, and we’ll get into the details in a bit.

The top and bottom of the case both features removable dust filters, although this doesn’t apply to the side-mounted intake, which only gets perforations from the rear panel itself. Also noteworthy here is the screw located at the bottom, which unlocks the panoramic glass for removal. We do find this spot rather difficult to reach though, and you most likely have to move the case near the edge of an elevated surface (i.e. table) to get proper access to this screw.

Removing the glass and rear panel reveals the internals in full, and here we can see the local-exclusive extras, courtesy of local distributor Sun Cycle Sdn Bhd: the FSP ZENFAN 120mm exhaust fan with a dedicated LED panel for fan speed and case temperature monitoring, along with the FSP VITA GM 850W power supply unit pre-installed at the back. That’s half of the case already pre-built for you, so you only need to bring your own motherboard (and motherboard-mounted parts) to get started.

While the PSU are pre-installed, the cables are not – you’ll have to do the connections yourself for that. Also, the toolbox is stored behind the drive cage which can be removed by unscrewing the four screws (lined up in the middle), which gives you extra screws of various types for motherboard and various component installations. You’re also given extra velcro tapes for cable management, although we end up reusing the ones bundling the PSU cables in this case.

Do note that this PSU only provides you with two PCIe 8-pin connectors and a 12V-2×6 connector – if you install a GPU that explicitly utilizes three PCIe 8-pin connectors, you’ll have to use the pigtail connector on one of them to supply the power required from the card. (The diagram above, which can be found under the Q&A section on the product webpage, shows the do’s and don’ts with regards to pigtail connections.)

For front panel, the case comes with a pair of USB 3.0 Type-A ports, along with a USB-C port for data connection; for audio, it is split into separate audio and microphone ports, instead of a combo jack. There’s also the power button, reset button, along with an LED button that switches between many presets with each press.

Installation

For this demonstration, we use MSI’s PROJECT ZERO B760M motherboard which features the rear connector design that, conveniently, simplifies the installation process as well, as you don’t have to route most cables through the channels. It’s worth noting that ATX motherboards will not fit on this motherboard unless it uses the rear connector design, while mATX and mITX boards will work in both versions. Pay attention to the ZENFEN’s cables as it may interfere with the motherboard – in this case we have to nudge the cables to allow the motherboard to slot into place.

Now is a good time to install PSU cables and plug them accordingly. Funnily enough, looking at the user’s manual we spotted an error where the depicted location of the PSU shown in the manual is incorrect. The highlight spot simply doesn’t house anything, aside from the fan cables.

Now, I certainly appreciate the fact that all of the fan cables are connected right out of the box, because I am not going near to that wired mess (at least when you screw the drive cage back on it’s mostly hidden). You still have to dig around to find the SATA cable to power the whole thing though. Side note, bonus points for featuring a combo 9-pin front panel header.

From this point on it’s just connect the cables, install AIO, connect more cables, and that’s it – the full build. We reused the velcro tape from the power supply to tie up all the excess cable length in one fell swoop, which still fits even with the drive cage installed (although we don’t really have to, since we don’t use 2.5-inch drives to begin with). If your setup involves a large amount of cables, removing the drive cage will free up some space to help with cable management.

Here are some of the photos showcasing the PC build, almost free of cables. You can also monitor the ZENFAN’s fan speed and case temperature via its LED display below, as shown in the third image. All the other six fans, while being unspecified models (likely not for sale as standalone), feature the infinity mirror effect on the hub and frame which gives them extra visual flair seen in more expensive fans/cases.

Verdict

For a bundled cost of RM799 which gets you the FSP M580 case, the FSP ZENFAN 120mm fan and the FSP VITA GM 850W modular power supply (or RM819 if you go for the white version), that’s great value considering the convenience and the parts you get for a relatively affordable price when all things are considered. Just make sure your GPU works with the PSU’s cable restrictions, and the motherboard compatibility – those aside, you can’t really go wrong with this one.
