Artifact, IG Co-Founders’ App, Uses AI To Eliminate Clickbaits

Tired of clickbaits? Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger made an app called Artifact, which is a news feed-based social media that lets you talk various topics with your friends. “Tiktok for text”, as The Verge describes – and this app have just the solution to remove all that annoyingly-written titles.
This is made in addition of the recently-introduced feature called “clickbait marker” just a week ago, where users can mark articles that they determine to be either inaccurate or misleading. In the interview with The Verge, Kevin Systrom said “tons” of people has used the clickbait marker prior to this. “It’s clear that people are passionate about ridding the world of clickbait,” he says. “It touches a nerve. What if we actually just build a product that lets you take action based on the problem that you’re seeing?”
But that’s one half of the story – as users can now call in the AI to ‘fix’ the titles for them. It’s straightforward: when a user deems the article to be too clickbait-y, they can simply mark it as “clickbait title” and the GPT-4 powered AI will step in and make the title as accurate as possible based on the content inside. No more “you’re not going to believe this” titles, how good is that?
Granted, it’s not perfect just yet. Systrom noted that humans ultimately decides what title is the best for the article should the offending one be marked as such, though this process could be entirely automated down the line. As for the AI, it’s not always bang-on when it comes to correcting the titles, but he says the AI doesn’t make the title worse even if it’s not necessarily better at times.
He also indicated that AI won’t be overstepping and rewrite every title, regardless of intentions. “I really appreciate and respect the editorial authority that publishers and writers have over their content,” Systrom says. “I think this is really only targeted at the most egregious cases when it causes problems for the users.”
