Kingston announced that the IronKey Keypad 200 Series hardware-encrypted USB flash drives, including the KP200 and KP200C models, have received NIST FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation. This effectively allows its use for governmental organizations, including US federal agencies, for use with sensitive but unclassified (SBU) information.
IronKey KeyPad 200 Series
A quick rundown on specs: the IronKey Keypad 200 Series is designed as an OS-independent encrypted storage solution compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android platforms through USB Type-A or USB Type-C connections, with storage options up to 512GB. The drives uses XTS-AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption, and its internal circuitry is covered in a layer of special epoxy to prevent physical tampering of components.
In terms of security features, the drives support dual administrator and user PIN access, allowing secondary PIN to access the drive if one password is forgotten; admins can also set global or session-based read-only modes to prevent unauthorized data modification or malware injection from untrusted systems. Besides data security, keeping the data safe from environmental damage is also important, where the IP68 ingress protection rating ensures that it can handle short-term underwater submersions.
Following this announcement, Kingston says it now has three IronKey models featuring the same security certification (KP200, KP200C, and the D500S announced previously). Based on local price listings, the pricing range from sub-RM500 to RM1,500 depending on the storage configurations chosen.
Pokdepinion: Security is paramount, good to see there are quite a few options.
