At the very beginning of 2025, ASUS revealed its next-gen XG Mobile external GPU (eGPU) module that now uses a Thunderbolt 5 connection, replacing the old XGm port while updating the GPUs to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 50 series. Originally, two variants were announced: the RTX 5090 Laptop GPU and RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, though for its Malaysia launch, we’ll only be getting the latter option (at least for now).

For the sole RTX 5070 Ti version we’re getting, you can still expect a few things: first of all, the GPU itself runs at a 140W TGP and comes with 12GB of GDDR7 memory, while the connectivity to the host PC is done through Thunderbolt 5 connector (which very few laptops currently have, today), compatible with Thunderbolt 4 and USB4. The redesigned chassis is also 18% smaller in volume and 27% lighter in weight, at 952 grams, and the internals now feature 150% more cooling surface to keep thermals in check.

Aside from the GPU’s compute power your laptop can tap into, the XG Mobile comes with an array of I/O ports, including: a second Thunderbolt 5 port (downstream), DisplayPort 2.1, HDMI 2.1, 5GbE LAN, UHS-II SD card reader, and dual USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) Type-A ports. (Note that the SD card reader, LAN port and USB-A ports all share a combined 10Gbps bandwidth, so when all ports are occupied, they each will be limited to 2.5 gigabits of bandwidth.) Power is supplied through an internal 330W power supply via an AC cable.

ASUS Malaysia says the XG Mobile (RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, GC34R-044) is now available in Malaysia, priced at RM6,299.

Pokdepinion: At least ultrathin users now have a relatively price-friendly option to boost the GPU power.
