MSI’s New PBO BCLK Booster Feature Is Another Overclocking Trick Up Its Sleeve

MSI has seemingly found a new way of extracting more performance out of the AMD Ryzen processors, as Wccftech reported this new feature, dubbed β€œPBO BCLK Booster”, will provide a small improvement in gaming performance. This is expected to be applicable primarily to its MAX series motherboards under the AMD 800-series chipset family, along with some specialty models like B850MPOWER and flagship MEG X870E models.

In what we assume is an internal briefing provided to the publication, MSI says this feature provides users with two one-click overclocking profiles: PBO BCLK Booster 1 (103MHz BCLK) and PBO BCLK Booster 2 (105MHz BCLK). This is apparently listed under the β€˜Precision Boost Overdrive’ setting found in Overclocking > Advanced CPU Configuration > AMD Overclocking within MSI’s Click BIOS X interface.

According to the charts, PBO BCLK Booster can provide around 3% performance improvement on its own, and when paired with DDR5-6000 memory using MSI’s own β€˜Tighter’ subtimings, this improvement increases from 5-15% depending on games. There are still more performance-boosting features yet to be enabled in this case, such as X3D Gaming Mode (which disables SMT and second CCD for best gaming performance).

In case you didn’t know, BCLK stands for Base Clock, which is usually set at 100MHz in most processors and are never touched due to its particularly sensitive nature, as most components rely on this clock to function properly. While MSI opens up one-click BCLK overclocking, it made sure to note in the briefing material that this doesn’t guarantee stability once the overclock is made, as CPU clocks will increase proportionally to how much BCLK is overclocked, because a CPU uses a multiplier over base clock figure for its effective clock speed.

Besides that, this feature does require additional hardware to work, which is why the supported models generally covers the MAX series intended for mid-cycle refreshes. More precisely, these motherboards feature an external clock generator to provide the stability need to increase BCLK frequency, in ways similar to a clock driver in CUDIMM memory that allows them to operate at much higher memory speeds.

Eligible motherboards will be able to use this feature starting with AGESA 1.2.0.3G beta BIOS release, though the full release is expected with AGESA version 1.2.7.0 release.

Pokdepinion: This should open up BCLK overclocking for the less experienced, although more precautions are needed to overclock this part of the system.
