AMD Confirms Ryzen 9000 Will Not Beat Ryzen 7000X3D Series In Gaming
AMD’s 3D V-Cache line of Ryzen processors have earned reputation for being the fastest gaming chip of their contemporary generations, beating even the fastest Intel chips on uber-expensive category despite costing less. So how does Ryzen 9000 stacks up against the competition, including the chipmaker’s own Ryzen 7000X3D series?
Ryzen X3D “Is Still The King Of The Hill”
In an interview with Tom’s Hardware, AMD’s Senior Technical Marketing Manager of Consumer Processors, Donny Woligroski, responded to a question regarding the performance standing of Ryzen 9 9950X against its previous-gen X3D offerings.
“Is it the fastest in gaming? It’s faster than the competition in our tests. X3D is still the king of the hill, but by a much smaller margin than typically between X3D and non-X3D. So a 7800X3D would, yes, be faster than 9700X, but maybe not by as much as you would expect.”
This is certainly good news to hear if you’re one of the many owners of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. However, as Woligroski said, the lead is now smaller as the new Zen 5 architecture brings IPC (instruction per clock) improvements to boost its single-thread performance (plus faster L1/L2 cache), a metric that games still rely on today. Of course, when the Ryzen 9000X3D series is out later this year – rumors are pointing to September – expect that lineup to comprehensively surpass the existing X3D chips in performance.
Ryzen 9000X3D vs. Ryzen 9000
Regarding Ryzen 9000X3D, Woligroski told Tom’s Hardware there will be improvements on the 3D V-Cache powering the next-gen X3D chips. “And then when it comes to X3D, and I’ll just get around that now, we’re super committed to X3D. In fact, we have some really, really cool updates to X3D coming. So we’re working on iterating and not just rehashing it.” Similar sentiments were shared in an earlier interview with another publication, PC Gamer.
For those soon to be sporting a regular Ryzen 9000 chip in their systems, however, they’ll also get improvements over the Ryzen 7000 beyond what spec sheets say. David McAfee, AMD Corporate VP and General Manager of the Client Channel Business, has assured that Ryzen 9000 will have better boost residency, meaning the chip will stick to boost clocks longer – and this converts to better performance over longer periods of time. This is done without increasing the power draw and subsequently, heat generation.
