Intel Confirms Lunar Lake CPUs To Arrive On Q3 2024
Intel isn’t going to let Qualcomm get all the spotlight this week – the chipmaker has revealed its latest plans for its upcoming CPUs, including Lunar Lake, the successor to Meteor Lake; and Arrow Lake, set to supersede the aging Raptor Lake architecture on desktop CPUs. This update focuses on Lunar Lake, which launches in Q3 2024.
So, what’s new? For starters, Intel will be bringing new core architectures for both P-Cores (Lion Cove) and E-Cores (Skymont), with “significant” IPC and performance-per-watt improvements, while the Low Power Island (LPE-Cores) is likely to further improve on efficiency fronts. The onboard graphics will get the all-new Battlemage architecture, though Intel calls it ‘Xe2’ here. More importantly, the NPU will get a big upgrade targeting 45 TOPS and above – meaning it should qualify for the new Copilot+ PC standard created by Microsoft to push a new wave of AI-optimized PCs.
All told, this converts to roughly 40% faster NPU over Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Elite SoCs, 50% faster GPU over Meteor Lake (Alchemist-based iGPU), and CPU performance “faster” than both AMD and Qualcomm’s current offerings, though no numbers were cited here. As for power efficiency, Intel is claiming Lunar Lake features 20% less power consumption over Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3, and 30% less over Ryzen 7 7840U, on the Microsoft Teams Conferencing test.
Expect Intel to reveal more details in this coming Computex which kicks off this June – we can also expect responses from Team Red for its upcoming Zen5 architecture.
