There’s a good chance that at least one of your friends on Instagram has two accounts – the primary one is for anything more public-facing, while the secondary account only allows close friends access. This is a trend that is referred to as β€œFinsta”, but now the app is taking the whole account creation out of the process so you can just put your alter ego self on a section that only the selected followers can see.

On paper, this sounds pretty similar to the β€œClose Friends” feature which already applies to Stories, posts, and Reels. Unsurprisingly, some have found this feature rather redundant – even the head of Instagram Adam Mosseri thinks such a feature isn’t worth adding. β€œWe’re not even sure we’ll launch it on Instagram,” he wrote in a Threads post. β€œOn one hand it feels good to create a clear space that feels more private. On the other, it’s yet another way to reach a smaller audience on top of secondary accounts and Close Friends.”

This feature was originally tested internally back in December, and according to TechCrunch, it was called β€œYour Space” during the early phase of development. Those who get added to the approved list of followers will see a separate photo grid on the user’s profile labeled with a key icon, which it’ll remain hidden from everyone else. The idea is that Flipside allows users to set a completely separate profile photo, name, and bio.

Pokdepinion: It does sound pretty redundant to me – but then again, people have created secondary accounts for such purposes anyway.Β
