Microsoft Office Gets A New Default Font, Aptos
Calibri, the venerable font that is the default font for all Microsoft Office products since 2007, is finally getting a successor. It’s called Aptos – a new sans serif typeface designed for modern high-resolution displays. The new change meant it will be the default font when you create a new file, which Microsoft says is currently rolling out to all users.
The font is originally called ‘Bierstadt’, and it was finally selected after a multi-year selection and feedback process that sees the font stand out among other 4 competitors. It’s designed by Steve Matteson – who also designed Segoe, which is the default system font across Windows UI since Windows Vista, and still remained in use today in Windows 11.
For those who want to stick with Calibri, the font won’t be going away – it’ll still be available, pinned on the font menu alongside Office’s previous default fonts, such as Arial and Times New Roman. As for the other 4 fonts that didn’t make it to the selection (Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite), the company says it’ll also be available in Office.
