Microsoft Edge Introduces Option To Block Autoplay Videos
Those who wants less distractions when browsing the web: rejoice.
Microsoft is testing a new feature in the development Canary channel of Edge browser, which blocks all types of autoplay videos right away. Current versions only offers ‘limit’ option which will depend on user’s interaction with the website, this new option will globally block all videos from auto-playing. “We have started making the feature available to some of our Canary users and will continue to make it available to more customers over the coming weeks,” according to Microsoft Edge team.
That said, the feature is already available in official release – except it’s hidden. To enable it, go to this link: “edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option” (without quotes), then select Enable. Once browser is restarted, head to Settings (edge://settings) and select “Cookies and site permissions”, scroll down to select “Media autoplay”, then select “Block” from the dropdown.
Of course, there’s a reason this setting is hidden away from most users. Any features enabled from the Flags page are often experimental and may occasionally break websites – but you can always revert back to default should glitches happen, by using the same steps above. The feature itself should officially roll out in the coming weeks, per Microsoft Edge’s blog post.
